Zone 1 FlyLady System – Tidy Up Entrance and Porch

FlyLady Zone 1 Cleaning: Transform Your Entrance, Porch, and Dining Room

Welcome to 2025 and to our fist session of the year in Zone 1 of the FlyLady cleaning system!

The holiday season has come to an end, and it’s time to start the New Year with a fresh and inviting home. In this blog post, I’ll take you through my process of tidying up the entrance hall and porch as part of Zone 1 in the FlyLady cleaning system. From removing Christmas decorations to giving the space a thorough clean, I’ll show you how to create a warm, welcoming space for the months ahead. Let’s dive in!

Packing Away Christmas Decorations

The first step is taking down all the festive decorations. This includes removing the wreath from the front door, storing baubles, garlands, and any other holiday décor in the entrance hall. To make this process smooth:

  • Gather Supplies: Have storage boxes, tissue paper, and labels ready.
  • Declutter: Check for damaged or unwanted items and decide if they should be discarded or donated.
  • Organise: Pack decorations by type or room for easy unpacking next year.

Taking the time to pack away decorations carefully ensures they stay in good condition for next Christmas and keeps your storage areas tidy.

Deep Cleaning the Entrance and Porch

With the decorations packed away, it’s time to deep clean the entrance and porch. This step ensures your home feels fresh and welcoming as you move into the New Year. Here’s my cleaning checklist:

  1. Declutter the Space: Remove items that don’t belong, like shoes, bags, or mail.
  2. Dust Surfaces: Dust shelves, light fixtures, and any decorative items.
  3. Clean Doors and Walls: Wipe down the front door, walls, and skirting boards to remove marks and grime.
  4. Sweep and Mop Floors: Thoroughly sweep away dirt and debris, then mop to leave the floors sparkling clean.
  5. Add Finishing Touches: Place a fresh doormat, add a plant or seasonal decoration, and ensure everything is organised.

Why Zone 1 Matters

The entrance is the first impression of your home, so keeping it clean and clutter-free sets the tone for the rest of your space. In the FlyLady system, Zone 1 covers the entrance, porch, and dining room—areas that welcome guests and family alike. Tackling these areas at the start of the month ensures they’re always in great shape.

My Top Tips for Zone 1 Cleaning

  • Set a Timer: Work in 15-minute increments to avoid burnout.
  • Focus on one task at a time: Don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to do everything at once.
  • Listen to something fun, motivating or inspiring while you clean: if we make it fun it will get done. I like to listen to podcasts, you tube videos or audiobooks while I do my zone work.
