Flylady Zone 2
FlyLady Zone 2: The Kitchen & Pantries
Welcome to FlyLady Zone 2! This zone focuses on the heart of your home: the kitchen, and for many of us including me, this is the hardest zone in the house. Keeping the kitchen clean and organised is essential for maintaining a smooth-running household, and with the FlyLady system, tackling this space becomes manageable and stress-free. Whether you're just starting out with FlyLady or you're revisiting your routines, this easy to follow guide will help you make the most of your time in Zone 2.
What is Flylady Zone 2?
Zone 2 includes your kitchen and any related areas such as a pantry, coffee corner or breakfast nook. This is where you prepare meals, gather with family, and start or end your day with a cup of tea or coffee. A clean and organised kitchen sets the tone for the rest of your home.
Weekly Focus in Zone 2
Each month, you'll dedicate one week to deep cleaning and decluttering your kitchen. This doesn't mean you need to overhaul everything in one go! The FlyLady system encourages small, focused tasks that add up to big results over time.
Here's one way you might structure your detailed cleaning week in Zone 2:
- Day 1: Focus on decluttering. Declutter one drawer or cupboard. Toss out expired items and donate or repurpose what you no longer use. Declutter your fridge and throw out those science projects (gone off food) and any expired items and empty containers.
- Day 2: Clean your appliances. Wipe down your fridge, oven, microwave, and small appliances like the toaster or kettle. make sure to clean out the crumb tray in your toaster.
- Day 3: Focus on surfaces. Clean your countertops, backsplash, and cabinet doors. I also like to give my bins a detailed clean.
- Day 4: Deep clean the sink and taps and all around the sink. Polish them until they shine! This is usually a nice easy job if you are shining your sink each night.
- Day 5: Sweep or vacuum and mop the floors. Don’t forget to tackle the corners and edges.
Tips for Success
- Set a timer: FlyLady recommends working in 15-minute bursts. You’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish in a short time without feeling overwhelmed. If 15 minutes is too much as it sometimes is for me work in 5 minute bursts or even 2 minute bursts. The idea is to make progress.
- Declutter first: Always start by decluttering. Cleaning is easier and more effective when you’re not working around unnecessary items.
- Consistency is key: You’ll revisit Zone 2 every month, so don’t stress if you can’t finish everything in one week.
